What the Average American Consumes in One Year!
Here is an interesting infographic on the foods Americans consume annually, broken down by category. If this isn’t an eye-opener, I don’t know what is. The good news is that our fruit and veggie consumption is higher than expected (fruits at 273.2 lbs and veggies at 415.4 lbs) — but dairy comes in at a whopping 600.5 lbs! I knew Americans eat a lot of dairy (partially due to the amount of money spent on its marketing campaigns), but 600 pounds!? Of non-cheese dairy!? That’s incredible! Not to mention that the amount of corn syrup we are consuming is almost as much as the grain category! Has anyone heard of heart-healthy whole grains? According to this, Americans wash down 29 pounds of french fries every year with 53 gallons of soda, and consume an average of 2,700 calories a day. That’s 815 billion calories of food each day – roughly 200 billion more than needed – enough to feed 80 million extra people. It’s no wonder Americans are tipping the scales!
